BG 17.11

A pure sacrifice is one which is made with firm conviction, without desire for reward, in accordance with the commands of the scriptures.

अफलाकाङ्क्षिभिर्यज्ञो विधिदृष्टो य इज्यते
यष्टव्यमेवेति मनः समाधाय स सात्त्विकः

  • aphalākāṅkṣhibhir — without expectation of reward
    aphala-ākāṅkṣhibhiḥ—without expectation of any reward

  • yajño — sacrifice

  • vidhi-driṣhṭo — in accordance with the scriptures

  • ijyate — is performed

  • yaṣhṭavyam — offering, sacrifice
    Yaṣṭavya (यष्टव्य) is an adjective for "that which is to be sacrificed or worshipped"

  • samādhāya — with conviction

  • sa — that

  • sāttvikaḥ — of the nature of purity

Sacrifice which is performed for the sake of its results, or for self-glorification, is the product of passion.

Sacrifice which goes contrary to the scriptures, unaccompanied by prayer, offerings, and faith, is one of ignorance.
