There are those who practice austerities not prescribed by the scriptures, enslaved to hypocrisy and their own ego, carried away by desire and passion.

अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः
दम्भाहङ्कारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः

  • aśhāstra-vihitaṁ — not directed by the scriptures

    • aśhāstra — against the scriptures

    • vihitaṁ — prescribed, decreed

  • ghoraṁ — stern

  • tapyante — perform

  • ye — who

  • tapo — austerities

  • janāḥ — people

  • dambhāhankāra-sanyuktāḥ — possessed of hypocrisy and egotism
    ahankāra - "I making"

  • kāma-rāga-balānvitāḥ — compelled by desire and attachment
