14. The Three Qualities of Nature

BG 14.18

Those established in purity ascend upward, those who abide in passion stay where they are, while those with ignorant nature and bad qualities descend downwards.

ऊर्ध्वं गच्छन्ति सत्त्वस्था मध्ये तिष्ठन्ति राजसाः
जघन्यगुणवृत्तिस्था अधो गच्छन्ति तामसाः

  • ūrdhvaṁ — upward

  • gachchhanti — rise

  • sattva-sthā — those situated in purity

    • sattva — quality of purity

    • sthā — situated in

  • madhye — in the middle

  • tiṣhṭhanti — stay

  • rājasāḥ — those in the nature of passion

  • jaghanya-guṇa-vṛitti-sthā — engaged in despicable work

    • jaghanya — worst

    • guṇa — quality of an individual

    • vṛitti — working

    • sthā — existing in a state or position
      Modifies the meaning of the previous word "work" to "keep working" or "whose occupation is"

  • adho — down

  • gachchhanti — go

  • tāmasāḥ — those in the nature of ignorance

The fruit of a good deed is born of purity. The fruit of passion is pain, and the fruit of ignorance is delusion.

From purity arises wisdom; from passion arises greed; from ignorance comes negligence and delusion.
