Sanjaya, in the Mahabharata, is a critical character who serves as a charioteer and advisor to the blind King Dhritarashtra. He is known for his integrity and loyalty to the King. Sanjaya possesses spiritual insight or divine vision, a gift bestowed by sage Vyasa so that he could narrate the events of Kurukshetra war to the blind king. This special power enabled Sanjaya to see far-off events, hear anything from any distance, and understand every perspective.
This unique attribute made him the live reporter of the epic battle, and through his narration runs the Bhagavad Gita - the seminal conversation between prince Arjuna and his charioteer, Lord Krishna, on the battlefield. Sanjaya's descriptions provide valuable insights into the many philosophical and moral dilemmas of the Mahabharata. Even though he was merely a charioteer, his role and contribution in narrating the profound dialogues of the Bhagavad Gita make him an essential character in the Mahabharata.
