Drupad, also known as King Drupada, is an integral character in the epic Mahabharata. He was the ruler of Panchala, a powerful kingdom in ancient India. He is most recognized for two key relationships - one with Drona, his childhood friend and later antagonist, and the other with the Pandavas, to whom he becomes a father-in-law.
In his early years, Drupad and Drona studied together under the same preceptor, developing a deep friendship. However, as they grew older, their bond strained due to differences in stature and societal expectations. The breaking point comes when Drupad, intoxicated by his kingly power, humiliates Drona, leading to a lifelong feud.
As a king, Drupad conducts a sacrifice to beget a son who could defeat Drona, resulting in the birth of his children, Dhrishtadyumna and Draupadi. Draupadi later becomes the wife of the five Pandava brothers, linking Drupad quite closely to the central narrative of the Mahabharata.
Drupad's colorful and eventful character arc encompassing friendship, betrayal, ambition, and revenge makes him a significant figure in the epic narrative of the Mahabharata.
